About Pyromania® Hot and Cold Red Hot Poker

Pyromania® ‘Hot and Cold’ is an upright red hot poker with tangerine-orange buds that open to creamy white flowers over green, grass-like foliage. Proven Winners lists a mature height of 30–36 inches, a spread of 24–30 inches, and summer bloom ([Proven Winners](https://www.provenwinners.com/plants/kniphofia/pyromania-hot-and-cold-red-hot-poker-kniphofia-hybrid)). ## Landscape Use Use this clumping perennial in a sunny border, as a focal plant, or for cut flowers. Proven Winners lists it as an easy perennial that attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds and resists deer and rabbits. Its upright flower spikes stand above the foliage, bringing a distinct bicolor display to mixed plantings. ## Growing Conditions Provide full sun and well-drained soil. The listed hardiness range is USDA zones 5b–9b. The cultivar tolerates drought and salt once established; average water, average to poor or fertile soil, and acidic to neutral pH are listed. The color contrast is strongest as the orange buds open into creamy white flowers. ## Maintenance Water new plants regularly while their roots establish, then maintain average moisture, especially during flowering. Avoid waterlogged soil. In zones 5b and 6, protect the crown with winter mulch or leaves and trim old foliage in spring.
