About Bradford® Flowering Pear

'Bradford' is a fast-growing, deciduous Callery pear selected for a dense, strongly ascending crown and abundant white spring flowers. The upright form can look symmetrical when young, but tight branch attachments are prone to splitting as the tree matures. [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/pyrus-calleryana/) describes the species and its regional invasive status; [NC State's Callery pear guidance](https://content.ces.ncsu.edu/callery-pear-bradford-pear-other-varieties-and-their-invasive-offspring) discusses Bradford and its offspring. ## Landscape use Bradford pear was widely planted for rapid growth and urban tolerance. In North Carolina and other parts of the Southeast, Callery pear is invasive; check local recommendations and regulations before planting. Cross-pollination among cultivars can produce volunteer trees beyond planted sites. ## Seasonal interest White flowers open before the leaves and can be showy, though their odor is often considered unpleasant. Glossy green leaves turn color in autumn; small fruits may be spread by birds. ## Maintenance Allow adequate crown space and inspect branch unions for cracking or separation. Remove dead or broken wood and use selective structural pruning while trees are young, following local arborist guidance. Avoid topping, which does not correct weak branch attachments.
