Javelin® is a strongly columnar Callery pear selection bred for a narrow, upright crown. Pink buds open to white flowers in spring; new foliage emerges purple, matures to glossy dark green, and develops orange-red fall color. [J Frank Schmidt & Son](https://jfschmidt.com/all-trees/introductions/javelin-pear/) gives a mature size of about 35 feet tall by 10 feet wide and USDA zone 5, and identifies the selection as developed at North Carolina State University.
## Seasonal Interest
The contrast between purple young leaves and the mature green canopy extends its interest beyond the spring flower display. Fall color adds a final seasonal change without greatly widening the upright outline.
## Placement
Its close, columnar branching suits a narrow vertical accent or a repeated planting with adequate root and canopy space. Allow for the reported mature height and avoid placing it where the crown will be forced against a building.
## Maintenance
Establish the tree with regular watering, then adjust irrigation to local rainfall and soil drainage. Check branch attachments as the crown develops and remove damaged branches selectively.
