Summercrisp is an early-season, cold-hardy pear selection whose fruit is best harvested slightly underripe and eaten firm and crisp. The University of Minnesota lists it as an interspecific hybrid, so its exact species parentage is left open here. [University of Minnesota UFOR](https://trees.umn.edu/summercrisp-pear-pyrus-summercrisp) describes the selection's harvest, flowers and growing conditions.
## Landscape use
Plant in full sun in average, evenly moist soil that drains well; Summercrisp does not tolerate standing water and may develop chlorosis in alkaline soil. Its fact sheet gives a mature height and width range of 15–20 feet, while the same page describes a tree reaching about 25 feet tall. Rootstock and site affect actual size, so check nursery specifications before siting.
## Seasonal interest
Clusters of white flowers with purple anthers appear in mid-spring. Chartreuse fruit develops a red blush and ripens in late summer. Pick it while slightly firm for the crisp eating quality that gives the cultivar its name; fallen fruit can need cleanup near walks and lawns.
## Maintenance
Water regularly while the tree establishes and during dry weather, but avoid waterlogged soil. Keep the fruiting canopy accessible for harvest and remove fallen fruit as needed. Ask the nursery about compatible pear pollinizers for your site and climate.
