About Chojuro Asian Pear Fruit Tree

Chojuro is a Japanese Asian pear with russeted fruit and a sweet, butterscotch-like flavor. It produces white spring flowers and a late-summer crop; the mature tree is a compact, rounded fruit tree compared with many standard pears. ## Fruit and pollination The [NC State Extension profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/pyrus-pyrifolia-chojuro/) describes medium to large yellow-brown fruit ripening in late August and recommends another pear cultivar for pollination. It also notes that spring flowers can be damaged by frost and that pear fire blight is a concern. Confirm a compatible pollinator’s flowering overlap in your area. ## Site and size NC State lists a mature height of 8–10 feet and spread of 6–7 feet, with a USDA hardiness range of 5–9. The tree does best in full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Protect the bloom from frost pockets and allow airflow around the crown. ## Maintenance Water consistently while establishing and during fruit development, then adjust to local rainfall and soil drainage. Prune in dormancy to maintain a strong framework, remove damaged branches, and manage fruit load. Thin crowded fruit where needed, and harvest when the fruit reaches the cultivar’s mature color and flavor.
