About Mountain Frost® Ussurian Pear

Mountain Frost® is the named Ussurian pear selection Pyrus ussuriensis ‘Bailfrost’. North Dakota State University lists an upright, oval form with orange-red fall color and strong fire blight resistance; Webb Landscape reports white spring flowers, full-sun exposure, and relatively few fruits. [NDSU](https://www.ndsu.edu/ndfs/recommended-trees-north-dakota-communities) and [Webb Landscape](https://www.webbland.com/plant-catalog/pear,-mountain-frost) describe the selection and its landscape use. ## Landscape use This cold-hardy flowering pear is grown chiefly for its spring display and autumn color, rather than a dependable fruit crop. Allow room for a broadly oval crown and choose an open, sunny site. Webb gives a mature range of 20–30 feet tall by 15–20 feet wide, while NDSU reports 25 feet tall and 18 feet wide. The cultivar is noted for fire blight resistance, but no pear should be treated as immune to disease. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and prolonged dry periods, and keep the root zone free of standing water. NDSU recommends protecting the trunk from winter rodent injury; use a suitable trunk guard in fall and remove it when protection is no longer needed.
