About Queen of Hearts Heartleaf Brunnera

‘Queen of Hearts’ is a shade-loving Brunnera macrophylla selected for large, distinctly heart-shaped leaves with a strong silver overlay and narrow dark-green veins. Airy clusters of baby-blue flowers appear above the foliage in mid- to late spring. ## Foliage and flowers The [Walters Gardens cultivar profile](https://www.waltersgardens.com/variety.php?ID=BRUQH) describes the more heart-shaped leaves and stronger silver pattern that distinguish it from ‘Jack of Diamonds’, along with blue spring flowers. It lists foliage 16–18 inches high, a 28–36 inch spread, USDA zones 3–8, and part to full shade. Canadian variety testing describes the cultivar’s mounded habit, light-gray-green leaf areas, dark-green margins and veins, and light-blue petals. ## Siting and size Grow in partial to full shade with reliably moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Iowa State Extension describes this cultivar as 16–18 inches tall and 28–36 inches wide, with better heat tolerance than some older selections. Flowering stems may rise above the foliage. ## Maintenance Water during dry weather and mulch to help keep roots cool and soil evenly moist. Remove spent flower stalks or damaged foliage if desired; routine pruning is not required.
