About Red Wall Virginia creeper

Red Wall® is a vigorous Virginia creeper selected for rapid coverage and vivid fall color. Its green summer foliage turns brilliant red in autumn, followed by blue fruit that can feed birds. Plant it where its strong climbing growth has room and the surfaces it may cling to can tolerate holdfasts. ## Identity and setting Proven Winners identifies Red Wall as Parthenocissus quinquefolia ‘Troki’, a fast-growing, salt-tolerant native vine. The selection reaches about 20 to 30 feet long and spreads roughly 5 to 10 feet. Give it full sun to part shade; sunny placement generally brings out stronger red fall color. NC State Extension describes Virginia creeper as a woody, deciduous perennial vine that adapts to a range of well-drained soils and average moisture. ## Seasonal interest The five-leaflet foliage makes a leafy green screen through the growing season before changing to fiery red in fall. The small flowers are not showy, but NC State Extension notes they attract bees; the blue fruits are eaten by songbirds and small mammals. Use Red Wall on a sturdy trellis or an appropriate fence, and allow enough clearance for its mature length and spread. Its adhesive holdfasts attach firmly and can be difficult to remove, so avoid painted or shingled walls and keep vines clear of gutters, shutters, wiring, and other vulnerable structures. Trim in summer as needed. The plant tolerates salt and a range of soils, but provide drainage and average moisture.
