Create design onlineAbout Red Zeppelin® Goji Berry
Red Zeppelin® is a deciduous goji shrub selected for its very large, bright red berries. Its long, flexible stems carry green foliage and summer flowers, and the ripe fruit can be eaten fresh or dried.
## Garden use
Give this spreading shrub room to grow, or train its canes around a sturdy stake to keep fruit accessible and the footprint more compact. The Proven Winners profile lists a mature size of about 8–10 feet tall and wide and USDA zones 5–9. It grows best in full sun and can be used in an edible border or a spacious home fruit garden. Fresh berries can be somewhat bitter; drying them improves their sweetness.
## Growing conditions
Plant in well-drained soil with neutral to slightly alkaline pH. The breeder describes goji as a shrub with many thin, vine-like stems and summer bloom. Green foliage is deciduous. Water needs are listed as average; avoid persistently wet ground and allow enough room for the mature spread.
## Maintenance
Set a sturdy stake at planting and loosely tie the canes around it, allowing some tips to cascade. In spring, raise the tie as growth continues and trim branch tips by several inches to encourage lateral flowering and fruiting growth. The source recommends feeding in spring and again in early summer. The selection is identified as ‘SMNLBBB’, USPP 31,084, and Canadian PBRAF.
