Carefree™ Spirit Shrub Rose

Carefree Spirit™ is a repeat-flowering shrub rose with single, flat blooms in a red blend. Its glossy foliage, bushy mounding habit, and strong black spot resistance suit a sunny border where the flowers can return through the season. ## Garden Use Allow about 5 ft of height and 3 ft of width. The [Kansas City Rose Society](https://www.kansascityrosesociety.org/roses-by-name/carefree-spirit) records those dimensions, while [Vandermeer Nursery](https://www.vandermeernursery.com/products/carefree-spirit-rose) lists a similar 4-by-3-ft mature size. The flowers are cherry red to dark pink, with a white center, and the shrub can anchor a mixed border without taking up the space of a large landscape rose. ## Growing Conditions Plant in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Water new roses regularly so the root zone does not dry for long periods; established plants need extra water during drought. Adding organic matter can improve soil fertility and drainage. ## Maintenance Prune in early spring as the buds begin to swell, removing older wood every few years to renew growth. Vandermeer describes this selection as low maintenance and disease resistant. The RHS lists its cultivar name as ‘Meizmea’ in its [Carefree Spirit profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/290394/rosa-carefree-spirit-meizmea/details).
