Black Satin is a vigorous, thornless blackberry with dark, sweet fruit for fresh eating and preserves. It can be grown on a trellis to manage the canes, while its suckering, spreading habit benefits from a planned site.
## Flowers and fruit
RHS describes small white or pale-pink flowers in late summer and black berries ripening in September. One Green World lists the cultivar as self-fertile, suited to half-day to full sun, and about 6 ft. tall on a trellis, with USDA zones 6–9. Mature spread estimates vary: RHS reports a broader untrained spread, so allow room for canes or prune and tie them to a support.
## Site and soil
Give Black Satin well-drained soil and regular moisture; it tolerates full sun or partial shade. Berries are useful fresh, in pies and jam, or frozen. The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/76245/rubus-fruticosus-agg-black-satin-b/details) describes the plant’s habit, flowering, and September crop; [One Green World’s Black Satin page](https://onegreenworld.com/product/black-satin-blackberry/) gives trellis height, site, hardiness, and fruit-use details.
## Maintenance
After harvest, remove older canes that have fruited and tie in replacement growth. Control suckers where the bramble is spreading beyond its allotted space.
