About Natchez - Thornless Blackberry

Natchez is a distinct thornless blackberry cultivar developed by the University of Arkansas, with vigorous erect to semi-erect canes and large, glossy black fruit. In Arkansas patent observations, berries began ripening about a week before Ouachita, with a first-ripe date near June 3 and a harvest period averaging 35–40 days. ## Growing Plant in full sun and well-drained soil, keep moisture steady while fruit develops, and avoid waterlogged ground. The firm berries have a sweet, mildly acidic flavor and can be eaten fresh or made into jams, jellies, juice, and wine. Canes can form a self-supporting hedge, though support wires help prevent loaded growth from falling in wind. The patent records white flowers opening from mid-April into early May in its Arkansas observations. After harvest, remove spent floricanes and retain healthy primocanes for the following crop. Thin crowded growth to improve airflow and make fruit easier to reach.
