Scrub palm, also called scrub palmetto, is a compact, clumping fan palm native to central Florida. Its modest mature size suits sunny or lightly shaded spaces where a small native palm is wanted.
### Form and placement
The [University of Florida IFAS plant guide](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/EP107) lists this native species at 3–7 feet tall, in full sun, with moderate water needs, and notes that it grows best in sandy soils. A [UF/IFAS Extension care profile](https://blogs.ifas.ufl.edu/citrusco/2023/07/19/foolproof-palm-care-scrub-palmetto/) describes a clumping habit, a typical size around 4–6 feet tall and wide, tolerance of partial shade, and moist, well-drained soil. Its flowers provide nectar for butterflies, while its berries are used by wildlife. [Kew](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:224808-2) records it as a perennial or shrub native to central Florida.
### Growing conditions
Use it in a sunny native planting or at the edge of a lightly shaded bed. The extension profile recommends planting from seed because transplant survival is low; allow enough room for the clump to widen as it matures.
## Maintenance
Keep the soil lightly moist during establishment while ensuring excess water drains away. Avoid transplanting established plants, and remove only fully dead leaves if they do not fall naturally.
