About Texas Palmetto

Texas palmetto is a slow-growing, evergreen palm with blue-green fan leaves and purple fruit. The Native Plant Society of Texas describes it from grassland, riparian and wetland settings and notes that its trunk develops only after many years. ## Size and growing conditions The Society gives a mature height of 35–45 feet and a spread of 12–15 feet. It lists sun or part shade, and clay, dry, loam, moist, poorly drained or sandy soils. Water needs are listed as low to medium; young plants need ample water to establish, and larger palms can be difficult to transplant. The profile records white spring flowers and birds as a wildlife connection. ## Maintenance Choose a site that can accommodate a slow-growing palm and allow it to establish before reducing irrigation. Avoid moving a large specimen once its trunk has developed. [Native Plant Society of Texas: Texas Palmetto](https://www.npsot.org/posts/native-plant/sabal-mexicana/).
