About Dwarf Palmetto

Dwarf palmetto is a small evergreen palm native to the southeastern United States and nearby parts of Mexico. North Carolina State Extension describes it as a slow-growing, low-maintenance perennial with blue-green to green fan foliage and an upright habit. ## Size and garden conditions NCSU lists a mature height of 2–10 feet and spread of 4–6 feet, with USDA hardiness zones 7a–10b. It grows in partial shade through full sun and accepts moist, wet or occasionally dry conditions, including poorly drained ground. Neutral to alkaline soils are suitable. Fragrant cream or tan and white flowers appear in spring and summer; black fruit is reported from August through November and feeds birds and small mammals. The source also notes moderate salt tolerance and some drought tolerance after establishment. ## Maintenance Use it as a specimen or understory palm, or in rain, water and coastal gardens where its moisture tolerance is useful. Allow time for its slow growth and keep newly planted specimens watered while they establish. [NC State Extension: Sabal minor](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/sabal-minor/).
