Leaves are yellowish green with a pale, whitish underside, and finely-serrated margin. Yellow catkins are produced in the spring with the leaves. Reddish-yellow fruit matures in late spring to early summer. Native to southern Canada and the United States as a riparian (wetland) species that cleanses water systems, prevents erosion, and offers natural forage for wildlife.
