About Dappled Willow

Salix integra is a deciduous, fast-growing willow from Japan and Korea, forming a large rounded shrub or small tree. Its species profile describes green foliage with orange-pink tones on young growth and small catkins in spring; the colorful variegated foliage belongs to selected cultivars rather than the species as a whole. ## Form and site The [RHS species profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/140355/salix-integra/details) gives a mature height and spread range of 4–8 metres and describes long red-brown branches with drooping branchlets. It recommends full sun and deep, fertile, moist but well-drained soil; clay, loam, and sand are listed soil types. This is a substantial shrub or small tree, so allow ample room for both canopy and roots. ## Seasonal character Short brown catkins appear before the leaves in spring. Fresh foliage may be orange-pink, then becomes bright green with bluish-green undersides. Choose a named variegated selection when pink, cream, and green foliage is the design goal. ## Maintenance Keep soil evenly moist while the plant establishes, and prune when needed to control its size or maintain the desired framework.
