About Flame Willow

Flame Willow is a fast-growing willow selection valued for young stems that turn orange-red in winter and foliage that shifts to golden tones in fall. It is sold under the name Salix × ‘Flame’; published mature sizes vary among growers, so give it room as a large shrub or small landscape tree. ([Wilson's Nursery 2026 catalog](https://www.wilsonsnurseryinc.com/catalog2026.pdf)) ## Seasonal interest and placement The colorful stems are most visible after leaf fall. Sources describe plants roughly 12–25 feet tall and 10–15 feet wide, with variation that reflects site, age, and pruning. Choose a sunny location where the winter bark can be seen and where mature branches will not crowd paths or structures. Water a new planting as its roots establish, and account for its vigorous growth when siting it. ## Maintenance Prune in late winter or early spring to manage size. Coppice or cut back stems when stronger color on new growth is desired; remove crossing or damaged branches with clean cuts.
