Create design onlineAbout Lighthouse Red Salvia
Lighthouse Red is an upright Salvia splendens with vivid red flower spikes and a compact, columnar outline. PanAmerican Seed lists it for sunny landscapes and large patio containers, where the bright flowers can serve as a seasonal focal point.
## Form and flowering
The breeder lists a mature height of about 24 inches and width of about 10 inches, with flowering from spring through late summer. The upright habit works in borders, containers, and cut-flower plantings. NC State Extension describes scarlet sage as a tender perennial commonly cultivated as an annual outside warm climates.
## Siting and care
Choose full sun or light part shade and well-drained loamy soil. Keep moisture regular: scarlet sage does not tolerate drought well. Use it as a bedding plant or in a large patio pot, leaving room for air movement around its foliage. ## Maintenance
Water during dry periods and remove faded flower spikes to keep the planting neat. In frost-prone regions, grow it as a warm-season annual and replace it after cold weather. Check container moisture more often than in-ground plantings.
