Sambucus nigra is a vigorous, multi-stemmed deciduous shrub or small tree reaching up to 20 feet. It features large, pinnate green leaves and flat-topped clusters of fragrant, cream-colored flowers in early summer. These are followed by glossy, dark purple-to-black berries used in wines and jellies. Thriving in full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soils, it is highly adaptable. Its rapid growth and suckering habit make it ideal for informal hedges, screens, or wildlife gardens.
