About Lemony Lace® Red Elderberry

Lemony Lace® is a cut-leaf selection of red elderberry with finely divided foliage that emerges reddish, turns bright yellow, and matures toward yellow-green. Its very early spring flowers appear before much of the foliage, and red berries may follow in fall; the fruit is not edible for people, though birds use it ([Spring Meadow Nursery](https://springmeadownursery.com/plantfinder/lemony-lace-72540); [grower sheet](https://springmeadownursery.com/files/resource_files/Sambucus%20Lemony%20Lace%20Professional%20Grower%20Sheet.pdf)). ## Placement and Season The bright foliage gives a shrub border, foundation planting, or specimen spot a fine-textured accent. Spring Meadow lists a mature height of 3–5 feet and a width of 4–7 feet. The breeder rates the plant for USDA Zone 3; its plant finder gives Zones 4–7, so local winter exposure and nursery stock may affect performance. Full sun works in cooler northern climates, while light or partial shade can reduce stress in warmer areas. ## Growing Conditions This shrub accepts a range of soils and average irrigation. Its foliage color changes with light and season, so use the contrast with green or dark-leaved shrubs rather than expecting a fixed yellow shade. ## Maintenance It flowers on old wood, so pruning after bloom preserves that season's flowers. Pruning after flowering can also reduce fruit set. Do not eat the berries; retain them only where bird food is desired.
