About Samurai Sword™ Japanese Maple

Samurai Sword™ is a vigorous Japanese maple selected for the scale of a small shade or street tree, with deep red palmate leaves and vivid red autumn color. Bred by Jim Zampini and marketed through Proven Winners ColorChoice Trees as Acer palmatum ‘Samarzam’, it develops a strong central leader and naturally upright framework. ## Landscape use and seasonal interest Allow room for a mature tree about 25–30 ft tall and 20 ft wide. Use it as a specimen or street tree where its size fits. Small red flowers appear in spring, followed by red winged samaras in early summer; foliage turns brighter red in autumn. See [Spring Meadow Nursery](https://springmeadownursery.com/plantfinder/samurai-sword). ## Siting and soil The breeder lists full sun to part sun and USDA zones 5–8. Plant in well-drained soil and provide consistent moisture while it establishes. The breeder lists no special pH requirement. ## Maintenance Selective pruning can shape the canopy, but the cultivar naturally develops a strong leader. Prune only as needed to address crossing or poorly placed branches.
