Snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata) is an evergreen succulent with upright, stiff leaves that grow from a basal clump. The Royal Horticultural Society describes Sansevieria leaves as vertical and fleshy and notes that plants occasionally produce fragrant white flowers; foliage pattern varies among species and forms. ([RHS Sansevieria guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/sansevieria))
## Growing conditions
Use a free-draining loam or sandy potting mix and let it begin to dry before watering. The RHS recommends watering when the compost starts to dry and growing Sansevieria in full sun to light shade; indoors, bright filtered light is a practical setting. Keep the pot from sitting in water.
## Garden use
The upright foliage is useful in a container or as a sheltered accent in warm climates. This species is grown mainly for its leaves; the occasional flowers are white and fragrant, but the flowering season is not specified by the RHS.
## Maintenance
Water sparingly and allow the mix to dry between waterings. Reduce watering in cool or dim winter conditions, remove damaged leaves at the base, and protect the plant from frost. Do not treat flowering as a seasonal guarantee: the RHS describes it as occasional.
