About Dwarf Umbrella Tree

Dwarf umbrella tree is an evergreen shrub or small tree with glossy, palmate leaflets. North Carolina State Extension gives mature outdoor dimensions of about 10–25 feet tall and 4–8 feet wide, while container-grown indoor plants are typically much smaller; it also lists red summer flowers and orange fruit that darkens with maturity. ([NC State Extension Plant Toolbox](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/heptapleurum-arboricola/)) ## Garden Use Use it as a houseplant, patio container, accent or clipped hedge in warm climates. Its rounded evergreen canopy works well as a small specimen where there is room for the roots and crown. Indoor plants rarely flower, but sheltered outdoor plants may produce small red flower panicles in summer. ## Growing Conditions Outdoors it tolerates sun through deep shade; indoors it prefers bright filtered light. Use a well-drained, organic-rich mix and allow the surface to dry before soaking the root zone. High humidity helps foliage stay lush. Keep potted plants in shelter when temperatures approach 60°F. ## Maintenance Check leaves regularly for spider mites, mealybugs and scale. If leaves drop, review both watering extremes, since either very wet or very dry soil can cause stress. Protect the plant from cold drafts and heating vents, and keep it away from dogs and cats because the foliage is toxic if chewed.
