About Greater Mexican Stonecrop

Greater Mexican stonecrop is a branching succulent shrub with pale green, club-shaped leaves and yellow star-shaped flowers. [Kew](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:231837-2) accepts Sedum praealtum and lists Sedum dendroideum subsp. praealtum as a synonym. The county’s abbreviated “S. d. praeltum” is interpreted as that historical lower taxon, with its spelling corrected. The [Royal Horticultural Society](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/22380/sedum-praealtum/details) describes container-scale plants around 60 cm tall, while botanical accounts report larger branching plants. Grow in a gritty, freely draining medium with bright light; filtered light can suit protected container culture. Water in active growth and sparingly in winter. Allow for a shrubby form rather than expecting a flat stonecrop carpet. This identity is separate from unqualified S. dendroideum. The [San Luis Obispo County January 2014 plant list](https://www.slocounty.ca.gov/departments/planning-building/forms-documents/environmental-forms-and-documents/plants-information/county-approved-plant-list) explicitly names Sedum dendroideum praeltum and assigns F2. F2 identifies its most fire-retardant plants for the 30–70-foot band from a structure. The category is source-specific and is not a guarantee against burning. The county requires suitable soil moisture, uncrowded planting, removal of dead material, separate planting groups and prevention of ground-to-canopy fuel connections.
