Create design onlineAbout Sempervivum SUPERSEMPS® 'Onyx'
‘Onyx’ SUPERSEMPS® is an evergreen hens-and-chicks selection with plate-sized rosettes of deep purple to mahogany-black leaves and a spreading ring of offsets. Sunset lists it at 4–8 inches high and 10–14 inches wide, with full sun to part shade and USDA zones 4–10; the collection describes its color as holding in warm climates. [Sunset Plant Collection](https://sunsetplantcollection.com/the-collection/plant/onyx-supersemps/) The RHS profile describes a mat-forming plant and lists pink starry flowers from June through August. ## Growing conditions
Give ‘Onyx’ full sun or part shade in a freely draining, gritty bed, raised planter, or container. It is low-water once established; avoid waterlogged soil. Its low, spreading rosettes suit rock gardens, borders, and containers, and the plant is evergreen in mild and cold-season gardens. A central rosette may flower only slowly; surrounding offsets carry on the patch. [North Carolina Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/sempervivum/)
## Maintenance
No regular pruning is needed. If a mature rosette flowers and dies back, remove that spent center and allow its rooted offsets to fill the space. Lift and divide offsets when you want to move or thin a crowded clump, then replant them in well-drained soil.
