About Barberton Senecio

Barberton Senecio is an evergreen succulent shrub with rounded growth and bright green, finger-shaped leaves. It bears fragrant golden-yellow flower clusters in fall and winter and commonly grows about 3–5 feet tall and wide. ## In the Garden Use this drought-tolerant shrub in a dry border, rock garden, slope, or large container where its upright succulent form can stand out. It grows in full sun or light shade and prefers well-drained soil; botanical gardens describe its native habitat as rocky, arid terrain. The common name also appears as succulent bush senecio. Kew accepts Kleinia barbertonica and lists Senecio barbertonicus as a synonym, while nurseries continue to sell it under the latter name. ## Growing Conditions Let the soil drain freely and avoid prolonged saturation. Once established, it needs little supplemental water except during extended dry spells. Its evergreen leaves provide structure between the winter bloom periods. ## Maintenance Water occasionally while establishing, then sparingly during prolonged drought. Remove damaged branches as needed and lightly shape the shrub after flowering if it has outgrown its space.
