Coast redwood is a very large evergreen conifer native to the fog-influenced coastal belt of California and southwestern Oregon. It has a pyramidal young crown, fine green foliage and thick reddish fibrous bark. It can reach 60–200 feet or more in cultivation, with much taller trees in its native forests; reserve it for a very large site, away from buildings and utilities. It prefers deep, moist, well-drained soil and a cool coastal climate; young trees benefit from partial shade. UC IPM recommends frequent irrigation and moisture-conserving mulch where needed. Hot, dry inland sites may cause serious water stress. Needles and small branches shed seasonally; remove accumulated debris and maintain defensible space. Napa County lists Sequoia sempervirens as a valued native for firewise planting, but no plant is fireproof.
