About Sequoia Tree

Sequoia sempervirens ‘Soquel’ is a fast-growing coast redwood selection with compact, upswept branching. New foliage begins light green and deepens in color as the season progresses. [The American Conifer Society profile](https://conifersociety.org/conifers/sequoia-sempervirens-soquel/) describes its growth and selection history, while [North Carolina State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/sequoia-sempervirens-soquel/) provides garden and site information. ## Form and landscape This evergreen tree develops a pyramidal outline and is useful as a specimen or in small groups. Growth can be vigorous: the Society reports a tree over 25 feet tall at ten years and an annual rate of at least 2.5 feet under suitable conditions. Mature dimensions vary with site and age. ## Growing conditions North Carolina State Extension lists full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. It identifies the plant as low maintenance and gives USDA hardiness zones 7a through 9b. The coast redwood’s best growth is associated with cool conditions and consistent moisture. ## Maintenance Choose a site with room for a large tree and maintain moisture while it establishes. Consider its eventual height and width when placing it near buildings, paths, or overhead utilities.
