About Silver Saw Palmetto

Silver saw palmetto is the silvery-blue form of Serenoa repens, an evergreen palm that spreads by creeping stems into a low thicket. Fan-shaped leaves, small spring and summer flowers, and wildlife-supporting fruit give it year-round presence in warm-region landscapes. Established plants tolerate extended dry periods and coastal exposure; avoid prolonged saltwater inundation. The silver form can grow at a different rate from green saw palmetto, and its spreading stems need room. Species references list a broad moisture tolerance, so water according to local soil and rainfall rather than keeping the crown constantly wet. Its stiff, fan-shaped leaves make a strong textural accent, while flowers and fruit support insects and other wildlife. Published mature size varies by form and growing conditions; leave enough space for a broad, slowly or rapidly spreading clump. ## Maintenance Maintenance is low once established. Remove only dead or damaged leaves, or trim older fronds when a neater outline is needed; avoid cutting healthy foliage routinely. The plant spreads through creeping stems and can be divided or transplanted when a clump outgrows its space. [FANN Seminars](https://www.fannseminar.com/2025/10/21/silver-saw-palmetto-serenoa-repens/)
