About Gray Moor Grass

Gray Moor Grass is an evergreen, cool-season clumping grass with narrow gray-green leaves and dark flower spikes. It makes a compact accent or small mass planting where a fine, blue-gray texture is useful through the year. [RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/65501/sesleria-nitida/details) [Digging Dog Nursery](https://www.diggingdog.com/plant/G-0575) ## Garden Use Plant in full sun or light shade in well-drained soil. Digging Dog lists this species at 18–24 inches tall and 15 inches wide, flowering from May into early July, and hardy to USDA Zone 4. RHS gives a broader possible spread, so allow extra room where conditions favor a larger clump. The dark, cone-shaped flower spikes rise above the foliage and add spring-to-summer contrast. ## Growing Conditions Sesleria nitida occurs in central and southern Italy, including calcium-rich mountain sites. It suits gravel gardens, borders, and larger plantings; keep the crown out of persistently wet soil. Water new plants while they establish, then adjust irrigation to climate and drainage. The nursery reports drought tolerance in cooler coastal areas, so treat that as a regional observation rather than a universal watering rule. ## Maintenance Remove dead leaves and old flower stems as needed. Divide established clumps after flowering in spring if more plants are wanted or the mound becomes crowded.
