About Shadowland® 'Sound of Music' Hosta

Hosta ‘Sound of Music’ is a giant SHADOWLAND® selection with heavily corrugated leaves, chartreuse centers and blue-green margins. Its centers mature toward creamy white in summer, while near-white flowers appear from early into late summer ([Walters Gardens profile](https://www.waltersgardens.com/variety.php?ID=HSSOM)). ## Scale and placement The mature foliage is listed at about 30–32 inches high and 60–66 inches wide, so give this broad hosta room to develop. Use it as a large anchor in a woodland bed or as a backdrop for smaller shade plants. Its thick, variegated leaves provide strong texture through the growing season, and the early-summer flowers add a lighter accent above the foliage. Walters lists it for zones 3–9 and for part shade to full shade. ## Growing conditions Choose fertile, organic soil that stays evenly moist but drains well. Dappled light or a bright shade position is suitable; morning sun is tolerated, but hot afternoon sun can damage hosta leaves. The profile lists acidic to neutral soil and average to consistent moisture. Regular water helps the leaves maintain their full size, especially during dry weather. ## Maintenance Apply mulch to conserve moisture and reduce winter heaving in colder gardens. Watch for slug damage as leaves unfurl. Once the foliage has gone dormant, remove it in early winter to clear the bed and reduce places where slugs and other leaf-feeding insects can shelter, following Walters’ hosta care guidance.
