Canada Buffaloberry

Deciduous shrub that appears in open woodlands and thickets throughout most of Canada and the western United States. One of the small number of Shepherdia species that bears edible fruit. Red fruits in summer have a bitter taste. Attractive dark green leaves with silvery underside. Tiny yellow flowers in spring turn to red, bitter edible fruit. Prefers alkaline, dry soils.
