Soft Serve Gold False Cypress

Soft Serve® Gold is the golden-foliaged selection of Soft Serve® false cypress, with a compact pyramidal habit and soft evergreen sprays. Its bright gold foliage brings color and fine texture to a foundation planting, hedge, or mixed shrub border. ## Garden use and size [Spring Meadow Nursery](https://springmeadownursery.com/plantfinder/soft-serve-gold-11980) identifies the cultivar as Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘FARROWCGMS’ and lists a typical mature height and width of 6–10 feet. The nursery describes it as a gold version of Soft Serve with a pyramidal form and an easy-care alternative to dwarf Alberta spruce. The cultivar’s [plant patent](https://patents.justia.com/patent/PP30665) describes full, compact pyramidal growth and yellow, yellow-green, and green foliage that retains its color in winter; the patent date is July 9, 2019. ## Growing conditions Grow it in full sun to part sun in well-drained soil that does not become dry. The breeder lists average irrigation and USDA zones 4–8. Its gold foliage is most visible where it has room to develop a full outline, but allow for a larger footprint than a small dwarf conifer. ## Maintenance Water regularly while establishing and during extended dry periods. Once established, avoid persistently wet soil and prune sparingly; the naturally pyramidal framework needs little shaping. If trimming is needed, the breeder recommends shaping after the spring growth flush.
