Tamarillo (*Solanum betaceum*, synonym *Cyphomandra betacea*) is a tender woody plant grown for oval red or orange fruit and large evergreen leaves. [Kew](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:306169-2) accepts the Solanum name for this South American species. The [RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/300972/solanum-betaceum-(f)/details) describes rapid growth, a potential height of 4–8 m and spread of 2.5–4 m; container plants and colder climates may remain smaller.
## Site and care
Provide full sun, shelter and moist but well-drained soil. This is a frost-sensitive plant; in cold regions grow it in a movable container or suitable protected space. The RHS reports fruiting from the second or third year when seed-grown and recommends seed or softwood cuttings for propagation. Reduce size only as needed and monitor protected plants for aphids, mites and mildew. Confirm the fruiting selection and local growing requirements with the nursery.

It advises avoiding moderate-flammability plants in the Building Protection Zone, preventing them from dominating a garden and removing dead material before it accumulates. Retain these placement and maintenance conditions with the assessment.
