About DarkStar Tomato

DarkStar is a large-fruited F1 tomato with an indeterminate, climbing habit and ribbed, oblate purple fruit. PanAmerican Seed lists 8–10 oz fruit, 70–75 days to maturity from transplant and high resistance to late blight and Verticillium ([PanAmerican Seed](https://www.panamseed.com/products/062000001042932/tomato-darkstar/)). ## Fruit and harvest The beefsteak fruit is suited to fresh eating and sauce, and the breeder describes early maturity and high yield potential. Fruit measures about 3–3.25 inches wide and weighs 8–10 oz. The published mature height is 60–84 inches, with a 36–48-inch spread. ## Growing conditions Grow in full sun and allow room for an indeterminate vine. PanAmerican recommends growing it in the ground with a trellis or cage; its product profile gives 18–36 inches of spacing. Kew classifies the species as Solanum lycopersicum in the nightshade family, Solanaceae ([Kew Science](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:316947-2/general-information)). ## Maintenance Install a sturdy cage or trellis as the plant grows. Check plants regularly for ripe fruit and harvest as it colors fully; the breeder reports resistance to late blight and Verticillium but does not describe those resistances as immunity.
