About Spanish Broom

Spartium junceum is a vigorous, multi-stemmed deciduous shrub known for its upright, rush-like green stems and sparse, ephemeral foliage. Reaching heights of 6 to 10 feet, it produces fragrant, bright yellow pea-shaped flowers from summer through frost. This Mediterranean native thrives in full sun and poor, well-drained soils, showing excellent drought and salt tolerance. While valued for erosion control and coastal gardens, its aggressive self-seeding makes it invasive in many regions.
