Pony Tails ColorGrass® is the Ball Seed product name for Stipa tenuissima, also called Mexican feather grass. Its fine, needlelike green foliage forms an upright, mounded tuft, while silky flowers mature from green to golden blonde. The breeder lists a 16–24 inch height and a 24 inch width, with late-summer and autumn bloom. [Ball Seed](https://info.ballseed.com/PlantInfo/?phid=059206635004251)
## Garden Use
Use this grass in sunny borders, gravel gardens, or containers where its airy texture can move in the breeze. Ball Seed lists it as drought tolerant and heat tolerant, with medium water needs; those traits are most useful after the planting is established. The breeder lists USDA Zones 6a–10b and notes that its winter display varies by region.
## Seasonal Interest
The fine foliage supplies movement through the growing season, and the flower stems turn blonde as they mature. In regions where the foliage persists, leaving it in place adds winter interest. The 24 inch spread is the breeder’s listed width, so leave about two feet for the mature clump.
## Maintenance
Comb or rake out loose dead foliage in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Avoid cutting into the crown. Divide mature clumps if they become congested, and use gloves when handling the fine, sharp-edged leaves.
