Tricolor stromanthe is a tropical, clumping foliage plant known for long leaves patterned in green, cream and pink, with burgundy undersides. It is also sold as Triostar, and botanical references use both Stromanthe thalia and S. sanguinea for this named selection. [Wisconsin Horticulture](https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/stromanthe-sanguinea-tricolor/) describes the plant as a warm-climate perennial, while [UF/IFAS](https://gardeningsolutions.ifas.ufl.edu/plants/houseplants/triostar-stromanthe/) recommends it as a colorful houseplant.
## Foliage and placement
The upright clump brings lasting color to a bright room, shaded tropical garden or protected patio. Its patterned leaves show best in bright, indirect light; direct sun can scorch them. The foliage responds to humidity and steady moisture, so it suits a sheltered site where watering and leaf condition can be monitored. Mature plants are generally compact enough for containers.
## Maintenance
Use a loose, well-drained potting medium and water when the surface begins to dry, keeping the root ball from sitting in water. Provide humid air and indirect light, and remove damaged leaves at their base. Protect the plant from cold; indoors, turn the pot periodically so new growth remains balanced.
