About Japanese Snowbell Tree

Japanese snowbell is a deciduous flowering tree with horizontal branches and pendulous, fragrant, bell-shaped white flowers beneath glossy foliage that can turn yellow to orange in autumn. Its mature crown is broadly rounded, and the bark develops shallow orange-brown fissures. ## Landscape Use Use this small ornamental tree near a patio, in a lawn or border, or in small groupings. It casts light shade and can suit a hillside planting. Typical mature references describe about 20–30 feet in height and spread, though size and crown form vary by site. [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/styrax-japonicus/) and [Cornell](https://woodyplants.cals.cornell.edu/plant/245) provide these garden-size ranges; the [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/75039/styrax-japonicus/details) describes its flowers and autumn foliage. ## Growing Conditions Grow in full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. Clay, loam and sand are listed; acidic to neutral soil is suitable. Keep moisture consistent, protect from drying winds, and prune in winter if shaping is needed. Seedlings may appear nearby. ## Maintenance Allow room for the horizontal crown and keep the root zone from drying during establishment. Remove volunteer seedlings where they are unwanted; otherwise, limit pruning to shaping or damaged branches.
