About Sunjoy® Citrus Barberry

Sunjoy® Citrus is the Sunjoy series name for Berberis thunbergii ‘Koren’, a compact barberry with bright yellow to yellow-green foliage and a rounded, freely branching mound. The breeder and cultivar patent identify its selection for resistance to sun-scald; the patent also describes resistance to black stem rust. ## Form and Foliage [Spring Meadow Nursery’s cultivar profile](https://springmeadownursery.com/plantfinder/sunjoy-citrus-03250) identifies ‘Koren’ and gives a mature size of about 2–3 feet tall and wide. The [plant patent](https://patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/8b/c5/5f/c816b9ef11cd55/USPP24818.pdf) records the same cultivar and describes yellow to yellow-green foliage. Its five-year specimen measured about 40 by 56 centimetres. ## Placement and Seasonal Interest Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Spring Meadow lists USDA zones 4–8, yellow spring flowers, and drought tolerance once established. The bright foliage works as a border accent, foundation shrub, low hedge, or container planting where its rounded form can be appreciated. ## Maintenance Water regularly during establishment and during prolonged dry weather. Once established, the plant tolerates dry periods. Its natural mound needs little shaping; if needed, trim lightly in late spring or early summer and avoid hard pruning into thick stems.
