Create design onlineAbout Sunjoy Sequins® Barberry
Sunjoy Sequins® is the trade name for Berberis thunbergii ‘Arlene’, a deciduous shrub grown for its changing leaf pattern. New leaves are splashed with white, pink, and green, then mature toward emerald; pink tones strengthen as the season advances. [Proven Winners](https://www.provenwinners.com/plants/berberis/sunjoy-sequins-barberry-berberis-thunbergii) lists the cultivar as USPP 31,117, and [Spring Meadow Nursery](https://springmeadownursery.com/plantfinder/sunjoy-sequins-03000) identifies Tim Wood as breeder.
## Landscape Use
Use it as a colorful hedge, border shrub, or focal point where the variegation can be seen. It is more shade tolerant than many foliage barberries, though brighter light supports stronger color. The shrub has thorns, so avoid tight paths and play areas.
## Seasonal Interest
Yellow flowers appear in spring. The foliage supplies the main display, moving from white, pink, and green toward emerald, with stronger pink color later in the season.
## Mature Size
Proven Winners lists 2–3 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide; Spring Meadow gives 3–4 feet in both dimensions. The current height and width values fit these published ranges, so the existing numeric sizes are retained.
## Siting and Soil
Plant in full sun to part sun in well-drained soil. The breeder lists zones 4–8 and reports tolerance of urban sites.
## Maintenance
Water during establishment and prolonged dry weather. Proven Winners describes the plant as drought tolerant and easy to maintain. It rarely needs pruning, though occasional shoots that revert to solid green can be removed.
