Sunstar® Red Egyptian Star Flower

Sunstar® Red is an upright Egyptian star flower with cherry-red flower clusters above green foliage. Proven Winners identifies the original selection separately from Sunstar® Red II, whose official page says its flowers are truer red than the original. It flowers in full sun to part sun from spring into fall, with large clusters that attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Use it in borders, containers, mass plantings, or as a cut flower. Proven Winners’ current Red II is a distinct selection, so its cultivar-specific traits are not assigned here. ## Growing conditions Pentas grows best in good, moist soil and tolerates poorer soils. Choose a draining site and water regularly during hot, dry weather. The original Sunstar Red is listed as heat tolerant, with long-lasting blooms that do not require routine deadheading. ## Maintenance Water new plantings while roots establish and during extended dry periods. Remove faded flower clusters only to tidy the plant or harvest stems.
