Sweet Sugar Tyme® is a compact crabapple with an upright oval habit and crisp green foliage. Light pink buds open to single white flowers, followed by small cherry-red fruit and golden fall foliage.
## Size and Seasonal Interest
The LCN cultivar sheet lists this selection at about 10 feet tall and wide, with fruit that lasts on the tree. Its compact form suits small landscapes, and the red fruit can provide a lasting display after flowering. The sheet lists USDA Zone 4.
## Growing Conditions
Flowering crabapples generally perform best in full sun and well-drained soil. Virginia Cooperative Extension notes that established plants tolerate some drought and urban conditions, though cultivar traits vary. Give the tree room to develop its oval crown and good air movement.
## Maintenance
Remove suckers from below the graft union to preserve the cultivar’s form. If pruning is needed to remove crossing branches or water sprouts, Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends pruning soon after flowering so next year’s flower buds are less likely to be removed.
