Treat these as garden-size estimates rather than fixed limits. ## Garden placement Use this upright-rounded shrub in a mixed border, informal hedge, or as a specimen where its early spring flowers can extend the lilac display. It prefers full sun for best flowering and tolerates light shade. Gardenia lists fertile, well-drained soil from neutral to alkaline, with chalk also suitable. ## Maintenance Prune immediately after flowering when shaping is needed, and remove spent flower clusters before seed set to encourage the next display.
