About Mount Baker Lilac

Mount Baker is a hardy early-flowering hybrid lilac with single, white, strongly fragrant flowers. [Oregon State University](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/syringa-hyacinthiflora-mount-baker) describes a spreading, upright shrub 10–12 feet tall and of similar width, with heavy flowering about two weeks before common French hybrid lilacs. It is hardy to USDA Zone 2 and develops purplish fall foliage. ## Garden use Use Mount Baker as a large flowering shrub or informal screen where its early white panicles can be seen and smelled. Its spreading habit needs ample room, and the autumn leaf color adds interest after flowering. Site size and form vary with growing conditions. ## Maintenance Plant in sun and leave room for the mature branching framework. Prune after bloom when shaping is needed, avoiding heavy late-season cuts that remove next year's flowering growth. Water while establishing and ensure the root zone drains freely.
