About Donald Wyman Lilac

Donald Wyman is a late-blooming lilac with upright clusters of pink-to-purple flowers and a multi-stemmed outline. Mature size and flower descriptions vary among published cultivar references. ## Flowers and form [Cornell’s woody plant database](https://woodyplants.cals.cornell.edu/cultivar/12029) lists the cultivar under *Syringa villosa* and describes late bloom, purple buds, and red-purple flowers. [Dawes Arboretum](https://dawesarb.arboretumexplorer.org/taxon-28387.aspx) identifies it as *Syringa × prestoniae* ‘Donald Wyman’, with deep-pink to nearly red June flowers and a dense upright form; Cornell reports about 10 feet tall with a narrower spread, while Dawes reports a nearly as wide as tall 9-foot plant. These profiles show that size and color descriptions vary among sources. ## Siting Give the shrub room to develop and use it as a flowering specimen or informal hedge. Lilacs generally perform best in sun and well-drained soil; Iowa State Extension’s [home-garden guidance](https://yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu/how-to/growing-lilacs-home-garden) discusses siting and seasonal care. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and extended dry periods. If pruning is needed, do it soon after flowering to preserve the following year’s buds.
