About Trumpet Tree (Tabebuia)

Tabebuia is a tropical American genus of flowering trees in the Bignoniaceae family. The name has been used across many species, and horticultural references differ as taxonomists separate some familiar trumpet trees into Handroanthus. Size, hardiness, flower color, and flowering season vary substantially by species, so species-level identity is essential when selecting a site. ## Floral and growth variation The genus includes trees grown for showy tubular flowers; colors and timing vary between taxa. Florida IFAS illustrates the range with species flowering in white, pink, yellow, or purple and flowering in spring, summer, winter, or the dry season. Modern treatments move some species formerly called Tabebuia into Handroanthus, while others remain in Tabebuia. ## Siting and use Before planting, identify the species and use its own climate range, mature size, soil, and watering guidance. The genus name alone does not establish hardiness or a single seasonal schedule. ## Sources [Kew Plants of the World Online: Tabebuia](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/30001133-2) · [UF/IFAS: Trumpet Trees](https://gardeningsolutions.ifas.ufl.edu/plants/trees-and-shrubs/trees/trumpet-tree/) · [Pha Tad Ke Botanical Garden: Tabebuia species](https://www.pha-tad-ke.com/plant/tabebuia-spp/) ## Maintenance Follow the care guidance for the identified species and local climate. Use structural pruning appropriate to the individual tree, and do not assume that advice for one trumpet-tree species applies to another.
