About Chocolate Cocoa 'Cacao' Plant

Theobroma cacao is a tropical evergreen tree cultivated for its cacao pods and seeds. Its small flowers grow directly from the trunk and branches, and the pods contain the seeds used to produce cocoa and chocolate. [NParks’ species profile](https://www.nparks.gov.sg/florafaunaweb/flora/5/2/5241) describes the plant’s growth, edible parts, and care. ## Flowers and Harvest Flowers are yellowish-white or pink; mature pods can be green, yellow, orange, red, or purple. Each pod contains numerous seeds, while the surrounding pulp can also be eaten or processed. Seeds are fermented and dried before further processing into cocoa products. The species is insect-pollinated. ## Growing Conditions In tropical climates, the tree grows best in partial shade with consistent moisture. NParks records tolerance of moist, waterlogged, and well-drained soils, including fertile loam and acidic soils; this range does not mean it needs standing water. Mature height is reported as a range, and growth varies with climate and cultivation. ## Maintenance Water regularly, increasing irrigation during hot or dry periods. Prune as needed to maintain the desired shape, and leave enough room for the trunk and canopy to develop. Protect young growth from harsh exposure while the plant establishes.
