About DeGroot's Spire Arborvitae

DeGroot's Spire is a narrow, columnar evergreen cultivar of eastern arborvitae, with fine-textured, fan-like medium-green foliage. The American Conifer Society describes its very fastigiate outline and notes that the foliage can turn dark mossy green to bronze in Midwestern winters. Spring Meadow Nursery lists it as an accent or very narrow hedge and gives USDA zones 3–7, full sun to part sun, and a 6–10 ft height by 4–5 ft width. NC State Extension describes Thuja occidentalis as a low-maintenance conifer that grows best in moist, well-drained loam and tolerates clay, while dry or exposed windy sites can cause problems. The cultivar was selected by Constant DeGroot and introduced by Sheridan Nurseries. Pruning is optional; if shaping is needed, prune in spring before new growth begins.
